That's according to a joint Health Protection Surveillance Centre/HSE study.
Analysis of data on the Covid-19 pandemic shows that only 10 percent of people who died from the virus were treated in ICU.
The figures released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and the HSE, also show that 87 percent of those who passed away with the virus had an underlying medical condition.
The median age, of the 5 thousand 179 people who've died from the virus, was 81 years old.
One-third of deaths occurred in Dublin, but Co Monaghan had the highest mortality rate in the country at 166 per 100 thousand people.
