Emergency services were called to Knockanure village at half past 12 this morning.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene - his body was taken to University Hospital Kerry for a post-mortem.
A man in his 30s was arrested in connection with the alleged assault.
He's being questioned at a Garda station in Kerry, where he can be held for up to 24 hours.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the vicinity of Knockanure village between midnight and 1 o'clock this morning, and who may have video footage, to contact them.
