Det Sgt Christopher Cahill said Derek Blighe was arrested at 7:20 this morning and replied ‘No comment’ when the charge of harassment against a named individual who is a member of An Garda Siochana was put to him.
Anti-immigration activist Derek Blighe is due in court again on the 18th of November, after being charged with harassing a Garda.
The 45-year-old of Curraghvoe,Mitchelstown, county Cork appeared at a sitting of Cork District Court today.
Det Sgt Christopher Cahill said Derek Blighe was arrested at 7:20 this morning and replied ‘No comment’ when the charge of harassment against a named individual who is a member of An Garda Siochana was put to him.
Det Sgt Cahill alleged that Blighe had engaged in a ‘campaign of harassment’ against the Garda over a ten month period and had filmed and posted videos of the Garda to social media on a number of occasions between the 22nd of February 2023 and 4th of December 2023.
The court heard in one video Blighe commented the Garda was "terrified now and afraid to leave his home".
Det Sgt Cahill also said the Garda was distressed and it has had a negative effect on the garda and his family.
Judge Mary Dorgan said she would accept jurisdiction on a signed plea of guilty only and remanded Blighe on bail.
