Triathlon Ireland said its officials confirmed to the Iron Man race organisers that the race should not go ahead
There are now conflicting statements about how the Ironman event during which two men died in Cork, went ahead.
On Monday evening Triathlon Ireland said its technical officials reviewed the conditions and deemed them unsuitable, now the organisers say that wasn't communicated to them until the swimming event was over.
Triathlon Ireland released a statement two days ago, saying its officials confirmed to the Iron Man race organisers that it was not possible to sanction the race.
In a statement last night, Iron Man said it works in collaboration with national federations around the world due to the number of events that it runs.
Iron Man confirmed federation representatives were present during the event, and performed their duties.
However, the statement goes on to say the federation reps only communicated to its officials that they would not approve sanctioning for the event several hours after the swim was completed.
The statement says Iron Man officials and the specific on-swim safety team determined the water conditions were safe for the swim to take place on Sunday, and the course was shortened for both races out of an abundance of safety.
Using videos and sports watch data, Sky News has been able to paint a picture of what happened in the Ironman event in Cork, Ireland, after which two men died.
