Defence Forces Open Fire After Chaplain Stabbed in Renmore Barracks

The man in his 50s received a number of stab wounds in an assault which happened at Renmore Barracks at 10.45.

Shots were fired by the Defence Forces after an army chaplain was stabbed in Galway last night.

The man in his 50s received a number of stab wounds in an assault which happened at Renmore Barracks at 10.45.

He was taken to hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

A young man in his teens was restrained by members of the Defence Forces and was subsequently arrested by Gardaí.

He is being held in a Garda station in the North Western Region.

The scene is being preserved, and a technical exam will be carried out later today.
