Drivers Still Dodging Penalty Points By Donating To "Poor Box"

Baltinglass resident Leo Lieghio from the Irish Road Victims Association says it's unacceptable.

Some district courts are still allowing drivers to dodge convictions for penalty points offences by donating to the poor box.

It's contrary to the rules introduced 11 years ago, which say the practice is inappropriate.

480 penalty point road traffic offences were struck out of court in the last three and a half years.

Baltinglass resident Leo Lieghio from the Irish Road Victims Association says it's unacceptable.

Separately, Mr Leighio spoke to over 18 hundred students today who were shown the dangers of misbehaving on the roads.

So far this year, 150 people have lost their lives on the roads, six more than the same time last year.

That figure includes two fatalities in Kildare.

The AXA Roadsafe Roadshow showed students photos from crash scenes and those who've lost loved ones shared their stories.

Mr Leighio shared the story of his daughter, Marsia, who died crossing a road when she was sixteen.
