One in five adults in Ireland struggles to read
The Government has set aside a million euro to help address adult literacy.
51 new, nationwide projects will be taught through the likes of cooking, boxing and comic-making classes.
Further and Higher Education Minister Simon Harris has launched the new adult literacy, numeracy and digital skills projects today.
One million euro has been set aside for the projects under the 10-year Adult Literacy for Life Strategy.
Currently, one in five adults in Ireland struggles to read, while one in four struggles with maths - something Minister Harris says the State - not those affected - should be ashamed of.
The funding is aimed at helping so-called "harder to reach learners", including older adults, Travellers, migrants and lone parents.
The government claims today’s announcement is just one step in its effort to ensure every adult in Ireland has the necessary skills to realise their potential.
