EPA Says 'Urgent' Action Is Needed To Tackle Climate Change

A report found that Ireland is unlikely to meet climate targets.

The Environmental Protection Agency has said further measures will be needed for Ireland to cut emissions by 51% in the next 30 years.

Projections by the environmental watchdog show Ireland can only meet EU goals to cut greenhouse gases by 28 percent by 2030, if all planned measures are carried out here.

The EPA estimates greenhouse gas emissions increased by 6 per cent in 2021.

It said the challenge is particularly evident in agriculture, but all sectors need to do significantly more.

Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan said Ireland needs to double down on the measures in the Climate Action Plan.

Ahead of the publication of this latest report, senior EPA officials described Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions projections as "very bad".

In summary, the report confirms that Ireland is way off course.

There is a huge gap between the ambitions of Ireland's legally binding Climate Act, which targets a 51% cut in emissions by 2030, and the actions needed to deliver on that ambition.

The report highlights that even in the unlikely event that every planned climate policy and measure outlined in the Climate Action Plan were fully implemented on time, Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions would only fall by 28% by 2030 - a little over half what is legally required.

Dr Bríd Walsh, Climate Policy Coordinator, Friends of the Earth commented:“This EPA report makes clear that Government has yet to adopt and deliver policies to ensure Ireland stays within our binding carbon budgets and reduces emissions by 51% by 2030.

"We need meticulous and urgent implementation of all planned climate actions and the identification and adoption of new actions in every sector.

"Key to this process is the Government’s introduction of new emissions ‘ceilings’ for each sector, due by the end of this month,” she added.

Programme Manager for the EPA's Climate Change Programme, Mary Frances Rochford, says more additional measures will be needed to cut greenhouse gases by more than half by the year 2050:
