Garda Spending Report Flags Several Areas Concern

It comes as The Committee of Public Accounts has published the 2023 spending report for An Garda Síochána

The Committee of Public Accounts has said that its report published on 2023 spending for An Garda Síochana, has "identified several areas of concern".

The report calls for stronger financial planning, improved governance and more transparent reporting across a range of issues affecting the force’s €2.3 billion budget.

Among the report’s recommendations are calls for clearer presentation of Garda expenditure, central oversight of cash held as evidence, improved financial planning to reduce year-end surrenders, better disclosure of exceptional accounting treatments, and stronger reporting on the costs and recovery of policing non-public duty events.

The Committee also examined issues relating to property and evidence management, Garda recruitment and resourcing, investment in technology, and compliance with statutory obligations, including Irish language requirements.

The Committee accepts that An Garda Síochána has taken steps to address some of the issues raised, but further action is needed to "safeguard public money and strengthen public confidence".
