It comes as a memo is being brought to Cabinet this morning
Government departments will be subject to much stricter spending controls under a memo being brought to Cabinet this morning.
Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers will outline to colleagues why its 'essential' they manage their money.
Last month it emerged the Department of Education was facing a major budget deficit, forcing the Government to step in and supply an extra €646m.
This money is being drawn from other departments and this morning their budgets will take another hit, with new curbs being imposed.
Details will be brought to Cabinet and Minister Chambers is looking for approval to bring in budgetary oversight groups to monitor departments spending.
He'll also outline to colleagues how he'll refuse to support new expenditure measures if money is tight.
