Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
Landscape workers in Dublin's north inner city have found a gun and a number of rounds of ammunition.
The discovery was made near the Luke Kelly statue in Dublin 1.
Adrian Harmon reports:
"Gardaí at Store Street were alerted at around 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon that a gun had been unearthed at the Royal Canal Greenway in the north inner city.
Landscape work was being carried out at the time, leading to the find opposite Spencer Dock Bridge. A number of live rounds of ammunition was also discovered.
Gardaí believe the gun and ammunition was in place for a prolonged period of time.
The scene was preserved and an examination was carried out.
