Choosing own-brand products can also save money, with Lowe noting that many supermarket labels are produced by the same manufacturers as well-known brands.
This morning on Kildare Today, John Lowe of Money Doctors shared practical advice on cutting the cost of the weekly food shop.
His core message was simple but often overlooked: plan ahead.
Setting out meals for the week reduces impulse buys, keeps you organised, and ensures you only buy what you actually need.
Lowe also advised checking cupboards and the fridge before shopping, clearing out anything past out of date, and setting a weekly budget - especially with Christmas approaching.
The more you stick to it, he said, the easier it becomes.
If you do pick up an impulse item, he suggests trying to work it into meals rather than letting it go to waste.
He also highlighted coupons, loyalty schemes and bulk buying where it makes sense - but not for perishables.
Choosing own-brand products can also save money, with Lowe noting that many supermarket labels are produced by the same manufacturers as well-known brands.
He said frozen foods are another strong option: affordable, convenient, and ideal for out-of-season fruit and veg.
