Robert O'Connor has pleaded not guilty to the three murders of his family members
The jury in Robert O’Connor’s triple murder trial has been sent home after an issue arose which requires clarification.
The 32-year-old is accused of murdering his parents, Louise and Mark; and his younger brother, Evan, at the family home in Drumgowna, Co Louth last year.
Robert O'Connor has pleaded not guilty to the three murders by reason of insanity, or guilty of manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
It is the prosecution’s case that he stabbed them after a conversation about his drug use.
In her opening address yesterday, the prosecuting barrister, Róisín Lacey SC, told the jurors that Mr O’Connor accepts that he caused their deaths, so the issue they’ll have to consider relates to his mental state at the time.
Ms Lacey was due to resume her opening speech to the jurors today but they were told they wouldn’t be required this afternoon because an issue has arisen that requires some clarification.
The jurors were then asked to come back on Tuesday. In the meantime, they were warned not to do any private research and to maintain the confidentiality of the jury room.
