The European Commission is suggesting EU citizens drive and fly less, reduce motorway speeds and work from home if they can

Kildare gardaí have seen an increase in drive-offs from garages, with more people not paying whilst at the pumps.

Joining for this morning's Crime Watch segment on the Kildare Today show, Naas garda member David Prendergast highlighted the issue, which he noted was prevalent in the county the past week.

Both petrol and diesel drivers have been taking off without paying, which is a criminal offence.

Garda Prendergast stated that doing so is classed as theft, which can result in fines, a court appearance, or time in prison.

If committed, a criminal conviction is also given.

It can be presumed that the increase in fuel over the past number of weeks is the main reason as to why there has been an increase of these offences in the county.

Listeners of Kfm have been sending in the prices of fuel in their areas, with petrol averaging around the €1.84 mark.

Diesel remains high, still at the +€2 price point.

One listener who texted in to the Kildare Today show said diesel was €2.13 at a station in the county this morning.

Meanwhile, nationally...

The European Commission is suggesting EU citizens drive and fly less, reduce motorway speeds and work from home if they can.

An emergency meeting of the bloc's energy ministers last night discussed the fallout of high fuel costs and oil shortages caused by the war in Iran.

Tánaiste Simon Harris said earlier this week that a work from home mandate wasn't necessary right now, however today has said that the Government will now have eyes on the European Commission's package of advice to deal with the energy crisis.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach is not ruling out a State of the Nation address as the conflict in Iran continues.

The UK, US and Australia have broadcasted rare statements from their leaders on the issue.

The Aviation Industry

As for how the conflict may affect the aviation industry, Michael O'Leary says there are risks ahead of an expected busy summer schedule.

Around 80 per cent of Ryanair's fuel is well hedged up to next year, but 25 per cent of supplies may be at risk.

Mr O'Leary remains confident however, saying he won't have to cancel flights.
