David Barry ofFirgrove Gardens, Bishopstown, Cork, abused the boys in various locations

A man has been jailed for five years for sexually abusing ten young boys through his role as a scout leader in Cork.

David Barry, a retired businessman from Firgrove Gardens, Bishopstown, Cork, abused the boys in various locations, including his home.

Our Courts Correspondent Frank Greaney has this report, which some listeners may find distressing:

"73yo David Barry faced 29 charges of child abuse.

The first survivor complained of being abused at Barry’s home sometime between December 10th 1986 and December 9th 1990.

Nine others came forward too. They were aged between 13 and 17yo.

In total, he admitted 28 counts of indecent or sexual assault between 1986 and 2008 and also pleaded guilty to one charge of attempted sexual assault.

Most of the abuse took place in his bedroom during overnight stays. Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin heard he gave some of the boys alcohol from a bar in his home.

His bar was seen as a real draw for teenage boys, the court heard.

Judge Ó Donnabháin handed down a 7-year prison sentence today, but suspended the final two years."
