Cotton buds, plastic straws and stirrers all covered in EU directive
A ban on single use plastic comes into place this weekend.
Ten of the most commonly found littered items will be banned such as cotton buds, plastic straws and stirrers.
The EU directive was agreed upon in 2019.
A deposit refund scheme for plastic bottles and cans will also be introduced toward the end of next year.
Mindy O'Brien, Coordinator for environmental group Voice, says it is a great step forward in reducing plastic waste.
