Over a thousand teaching posts are still vacant with just weeks to go before the new school term begins.

646 primary school jobs are advertised on education posts dot.ie this morning, along with 458 at second-level.

The Department of Education is facing calls to improve pay and conditions to attract more people into the profession.

Principal of Portlaoise College, Noel Daly, says the accommodation shortage and growing student numbers are also a challenge:
