The Health Research Board has described their findings as "stark"
84% of people who died while homeless in 2022 had a history of substance use, according to the latest data from the Health Research Board (HRB).
Overall, 10 people died in homelessness every month in 2022.
The cause of death for over a third of them was poisoning - with opioids the most common drug implicated, followed by benzodiazepines, cocaine and alcohol.
The report has revealed that 124 people lost their lives while experiencing homelessness in 2022.
As well as this, 38% suffered from known mental health issues.
The research also highlights premature mortality among the homeless community, with the average age of death just 46 years.
It explains that 85.4% of those in the homeless community died before reaching 60 years-of-age, in comparison to only 12.7% of the general population in Ireland.
In response to the figures, David Carroll, Chief Executive of Depaul, notes this is a stark reminder that every month lives are lost due to preventable homelessness in Ireland.
