The National Transport Authority recently raised the idea of a €10 per car per day congestion charge
Socialist Party TD Mick Barry will warn Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in the Dáil today that there will be strong public opposition to any attempt to introduce congestion charges or to hike parking charges.
His comments come as Transport Minister Eamonn Ryan brings plans to Cabinet this morning to reduce traffic congestion in towns and cities with suggestions that congestion charges and parking charge hikes could soon be on the cards.
The National Transport Authority recently raised the idea of a €10 per car per day congestion charge and a fourfold increase in parking charges on 2016 rates.
Deputy Barry commented: "The best way to reduce car use in our cities is to introduce free public transport. The Green Party have unfortunately voiced opposition to that and now seem to be flying a kite for congestion charges and an increase in parking charges.
"I will question the Taoiseach on this issue today and make it crystal clear that there will be strong public opposition to any attempt to go down this road," he added.
