The Tánaiste is cautiously hopeful about a temporary ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.

Senior Hamas officials claim hostages in Gaza could be freed soon, in exchange for Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners.

Irish-Israeli girl Emily Hand is believed to be among those being kept captive by the militant group.

Speaking before today's Cabinet meeting, Tánaiste Micheál Martin says negotiations have been ongoing to secure their release:
