It’s the biggest diplomatic event in the world as the UN gathers its member states at its waterfront headquarters in Manhattan.
Five members of the Government are traveling – Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee, Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien and Junior Ministers Neale Richmond and Timmy Dooley.
On their agenda this week – the Middle East including Palestine, support for Ukraine, the Irish Presidency of the EU Council and addressing a backsliding in rights for women and girls across the world.
The summit will also have a big focus on climate change, artificial intelligence and the Sustainable Development Goals which are meant to be achieved by the end of this decade.
Micheál Martin will address the UN on Thursday for Ireland’s National Statement – the same day Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak, while Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas will address by video link after being denied a visa.
The UN will also be focusing on a replacement for Antonio Gutteres, who steps down as Secretary General at the end of the year, with no clear favourite to replace him after three rounds of private polling.
