The DSPCA is encouraging people to neuter wild feral cats to prevent overpopulation in the country.
A new campaign launched by The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals DSPCA, has claimed that neutering a cat, can prevent 2 million kitten births over an 8 year period.
The campaign is aimed at preventing the numbers of wild feral cats.
The Trap, Neuter and Return programme is being promoted to highlight the importance of spay neutering at this time of the year, with the cat population having stopped their natural breeding season after the summer.
The programme outlines the mind-boggling 2 million kittens over 8 years statistic, which shows the massive exponential numbers involved
This is based on one un-neutered female, her mate and their offspring producing 2 litters in the wild per year, with an average survival rate of 3 kittens per litter.
The DSPCA says these animals have short lived, difficult, sick lives.
Spokesperson Suzanne McGovern says controlling their numbers is essential, as they breed an an incredible rate.
