President Michael D Higgins has expressed sorrow over the death of a 39-year-old sailor from the LÉ Róisín.
Paramedics were called to the ship, after Leading Seaman Conor Kiely was found, unresponsive, by his colleagues yesterday afternoon, while in port in Cork.
President Higgins says he will be remembered by all those who served with him, on a number of Irish vessels, including the LÉ Aisling, LÉ Niamh, LÉ Orla, LÉ William Butler Yeats and the LÉ Róisín.
The Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy has also expressed his condolences on behalf of the Defence Forces.
