Motorsport Ireland said it has now begun an investigation into today’s events.
Two competitors have died after their car collided with a wall at the Sligo Stages Rally on Sunday.
Two separate investigations have been launched into the deaths of Gene McDonald, from Co Cavan, and Daire Maguire, from Co Fermanagh, who both died after their car hit a wall during the rally.
Motorsport Ireland offered its sympathies to the families and friends of the two men, the driver and co-driver, who were fatally injured during the crash while competing on stage six of the rally.
Earlier the organisers of the rally, Connacht Motor Club, confirmed an incident had taken place resulting in the event being halted.
Gardaí attended the scene of the collision at Carrowcushcly, near Ballymote, Co Sligo. They appealed to the public not to share footage of the crash on social media.
The bodies of the two men were later removed from the scene and brought to Sligo University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place.
