Two new hospitals for Dublin have been given the green light in a bid to cut waiting lists.

The locations at Blanchardstown and Crumlin are expected to be officially announced shortly.

While elective hospitals are also planned for Galway and Cork.

They will cater for high-volume day procedures, gastrointestinal scopes, minor operations and outpatient treatment and diagnostics.

The hospitals will have up to 25 theatres each as part of efforts to speed-up the treatment of the thousands of people on waiting lists but there will be no emergency departments.
