Overcrowding has left almost 1,200 prisoners without beds
Prison overcrowding is at it's worst in the history of the State, according to the Prison Officers Association.
At the end of March, a record 5,909 were in custody.
The capacity is 4,736 leaving almost 1,173 prisoners without beds.
The number of prisoners has doubled in the last 26 years to almost six thousand.
The association is holding it's annual delegate conference in Kilkenny today.
