A Busy Day One At The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham

Eric Favors has qualified for his first-ever major championship final in the men's shot put.

It's been a busy day so far for the Irish team at the first day of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Eric Favors has qualified for his first-ever major championship final in the men's shot put - which will be at 8:33pm this evening

Mark English won his heat in the 800-metres to go through to Wednesday's semi-finals.

Ciara Neville finished in fifth in her 100-metres heat to qualify for tonight's semi-finals at 8.10pm.

Jack Raftery came second in the 400-metres heats to progress to the semi-final tomorrow.

Lauren Roy missed out on qualification for the next round of the 100m.

Cian McPhillips - who finished fourth in the World Championships last year - failed to qualify for the 800m semi-final.

McPhillips had been struggling with an illness in the lead up to the Championships.

In the evening session, Darragh McElhinney, Nick Griggs, and Brian Fay will compete in the men's 5-thousand metres final from 8:40pm.

While Sarah Lavin begins her 100-metres hurdles campaign just before 7:45pm.
