Defending champion Fiona Murtagh has advanced to the women's single sculls quarter-finals at the World Rowing Championships.

The Galway native was second in her heat this afternoon.

Fintan McCarthy finished second in the heats of the men's single sculls.

McCarthy - who has four world golds in double sculls events - is into the quarter-finals.

Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde will go in the women's double sculls semi final this afternoon.

They're due on the water in Amsterdam at around 3:55pm - Irish Time.

While Imogen Magner and Natalie Long are in the women's pair semi-final, for a 3:27pm start.

Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney finished second behind Sweden in the Men's Pair C Final in the last half-hour.
