SOCCER

Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson believes boycotting their games against Israel would be "wrong", for footballing reasons.

They're due to face their Israeli counterparts in the Nations League later this year, but there have been calls for the FAI not to fulfil the fixtures.

Ireland were 1-0 winners over Qatar in an international friendly at the Aviva Stadium.

Captain Nathan Collins headed home the winner after 5 minutes.

 

A top of the table clash headlines tonight's action in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division.

Shamrock Rovers hold a five-point cushion at the summit ahead of hosting their title rivals St Pat's in a Dublin derby at Tallaght Stadium.

Kevin Zefi could make his debut for Sligo Rovers against Bohemians, where Bohs' captain Dawson Devoy is set to feature before linking up with the Ireland squad.

RUGBY

Connacht's head coach Stuart Lancaster says they've "nothing to lose" heading into tonight's United Rugby Championship quarter-final at Glasgow.

The western province go to Scotland knowing they've already secured Champions Cup rugby for next year through their league finish.

Lancaster admits that Scotstoun is a "very, very difficult place to go and win".

Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

 

TENNIS

The third-round gets underway at the French Open tennis at Roland Garros this morning.

Four-time women's champion Iga Swiatek takes on Magda Linette in an all Polish encounter.

With top seed Jannik Sinner knocked out yesterday, Alexander Zverev is now the favourite for the men's title.

The second seed faces home favourite Quentin Halys in the evening session.

Novak Djokovic is up against 28th seed Joao Fonseca.

 

GOLF

Séamus Power is five shots off the lead heading into Day 2 of the Charles Schwab Challenge.

An opening-round 69 leaves the Waterford golfer on one-under-par in Texas, with JJ Spaun among the six players leading the way on six-under.

Power tees off his second round just after 1.20pm.

 

Leona Maguire and Kill's Lauren Walsh are among the field for the opening round of the ShopRite LGPA today.

Walsh begins her campaign in New Jersey at around 12.40pm, while Maguire is out on course just after 6.40pm.
