Harrington Two Off The Lead After Strong Start In Portugal

Pádraig Harrington is well placed after the opening round of the Portugal Invitational, carding a six-under-par 66 to sit just two shots off the lead.

Pádraig Harrington has made an impressive start at the Senior Open in Portugal, opening with a six-under-par 66 to finish the first round tied for third.

The Dubliner birdied six holes on the front nine before adding further gains on the 10th and 15th, with his only dropped shot coming at the 17th.

His round leaves him just two strokes behind leader Zach Johnson.

Harrington, who recently accepted the role of Europe's vice-captain for next year's Ryder Cop at Adare Manor, is chasing his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the season.

Elsewhere, Darren Clarke opened with a one-under-par 71 and is tied for 42nd after the opening day in Vilamoura.
