The game changed after Elmes Kilan was sent to the sin bin just after the hour mark, with the USA scoring three tries during that period to turn that match around.

Ireland have suffered a dramatic 40-36 defeat to the United States in their opening game of the WXV Global Series in Tallaght.

Scott Bemand's side made a flying start and led 17-0 inside the opening 20 minutes before stretching their advantage to 19 points after the break.

Tries from Vicky Elmes Kinlan, Cliodna Moloney, Aoife Wafer, and Eve Higgins helped put Ireland in a commanding position.

Erin King crossed late for Ireland, but it was not enough to rescue the result as the visitors completed a remarkable comeback.
