Irish Golfers Remain in Olympic Medal Contention

Rory McIlroy just three shots off the lead after Round 3.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry remain in medal contention after three rounds of the golf at the Olympics.

Four-time major winner McIlroy carded a 4-under-par round of 67 this morning to move to fifth-place at 11-under.

While his playing partner Lowry is 10-under-par heading into tomorrow's final round.

USA's Xander Schauffele holds a one-shot lead in the gold medal position at 14-under.

Mark English didn't progress to the semi-finals of the 800-metres after finishing fourth in his heat.

The Donegal athlete's time of 1:46.75 was two seconds slower than the Irish record he set last month.

A second-best ever run from Limerick's Sarah Lavin wasn't enough for her to advance from the 100-metres hurdles heats.

She clocked 13.16 seconds in placing seventh this morning.

The quartet of Sophie Becker, Phil Healy, Cillin Greene, Christopher O’Donnell go in the final of the 4-by-400 mixed relay at 1.35 this afternoon.

Despite winning the 12th and final race in sailing's 49er event, Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove have missed out on a place in the medal race.

They've placed 13th overall with the top 10 boats qualifying for the final.

Sarah Ennis says she's "very disappointed" with her performance in the dressage.

Ennis and her horse Woodcourt Garrison scored 38-10 in place 50th individually.

It leaves the Irish team sitting 13th overall ahead of tomorrow's cross-country event.
