SWIMMIMG

Ireland's swimmers are continuing their celebrations today following a historic week at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris.

Team Ireland brought home five medals overall - two golds from Ellen Walshe, and two bronze medals and a silver medal from Mona McSharry.

The last of the podium finishes came on Sunday evening as McSharry secured third place in the 50 metres breaststroke.

The Sligo swimmer's medals also came in the 100 metres and 200 metres breaststroke events.

Dubliner Walshe was crowned European champion in the 200 metres and 400 metres individual medley events.

ATHLETICS

The Irish athletics team claimed four medals at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

During the week, Mark English became European 800 metres champion, while Rhasidat Adeleke produced a stunning display on her way to winning silver in the 200 metres.

Another gold medal was added on Saturday night when Kate O'Connor got the better of her competitors in the heptathlon.

That was followed up by Andrew Coscoran's bronze medal in the 15 hundred metres - a first major outdoor medal for the 30-year-old.

However, there wasn't to be a fifth medal on the last day of action as Sarah Healy finished fifth and Sophie O'Sullivan crossed the line in eighth in the 15 hundred metres.

SOCCER

Arsenal overcame Man City by three goals to nil in yesterday's Community Shield.

Ricardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard were on the scoresheet for the Premier League champions.

Mikel Arteta's side open the new season on Friday night when they take on Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.

City begin their Premier League campaign with a home tie against Bournemouth on Sunday.

17-year-old Sam Rooney came off the bench to complete a three-two come-from-behind victory for St Patrick's Athletic in their FAI Cup third round encounter with Shamrock Rovers yesterday.

Bohemians also advanced to the quarter-finals as they secured a four-nil win at home to Longford Town last night.

The opening weekend of the Championship draws to a close tonight.

There's a Welsh derby to look forward to, as Brian Barry-Murphy's newly-promoted Cardiff City side play host to Wrexham.

Kick-off is at 8pm.

Rodri is on the verge of completing his move from Manchester City to Barcelona.

City have agreed a 70 million euro transfer fee with the La Liga champions for the midfielder.

The Spanish captain has won four Premier League titles and a Champions League during a glittering seven-year spell at the Etihad.

Scotland have confirmed the appointment of Sebastien Pocognoli as the new manager of their men's national team.

The Belgian replaces Steve Clarke at the helm after he resigned from the position in the wake of Scotland's group stage exit at the World Cup.

Pocognoli guided Union St Gilloise to the Belgian title in 2025 and was most recently in charge of Monaco.

GOLF

Rory McIlroy had a week to forget at the St Jude Championship after finishing 66th out of 68 golfers.

The Masters champion ended on 8 over-par - 25 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler at TPW Southwind.

McIlroy had not played competitively since last month's Open Championship.

He says he's pretty pessimistic about his chances for the rest of the play-offs.
