New Zealand's one of only five countries which still allows commercial greyhound racing, along with the Republic of Ireland, the US, Australia and the UK
Greyhound racing could be banned in New Zealand from 2026.
The government says there's an "unacceptably high" level of dogs either dying or being injured from the events.
The proposal is to wind down racing and to re-home almost 3,000 animals.
The government introduced a bill, with the support of the opposition Labour party, to prevent the unnecessary killing of racing dogs.
It will introduce further legislation next year to make changes to the existing laws to outlaw greyhound racing, said Minister for Racing Winston Peters.
