Saturday Sport: It's 2000 Guineas Day At The Curragh & Kildare Hurlers In Christy Ring Cup Final.

HORSE RACING

 

Today is 2000 Guineas day at the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival at the Curragh.

Native Trail has eight rivals to beat if he is to justify his favourite’s tag for the Group 1 feature.

Charlie Appleby’s charge, last year’s European champion two-year-old, is one of two English challengers, with the Andrew Balding-trained Imperial Fighter also declared.

The home team is headed by the Joseph O'Brien-trained Buckaroo.

Aidan O'Brien’s Ivy League, Ger Lyons’ Atomic Jones, Dermot Weld’s Duke De Sessa also go to post in the first Irish Classic of the season.

Racing begins both days at 1.35.  Kfm will broadcast live from the Curragh today and tomorrow.

GAA

The Kildare hurlers play Mayo today at 5pm in the Christy Ring Cup final in Croke Park.

Last weekend, they completed the Round Robin series unbeaten, against Sligo

The Leinster Hurling Championship round-robin section concludes this evening.

Wexford need to beat Kilkenny at Nowlan Park to keep their hopes of staying in the championship alive.

Galway can confirm their place in the decider by avoiding defeat at home to Dublin, while Laois and Westmeath play to avoid relegation.

Throw-in for all three matches is at 6pm.

It's a historic afternoon in football, as the first-ever Tailteann Cup game takes place.

Wicklow and Waterford meet in the southern section preliminary round.

Throw-in is at 3pm in Aughrim. In Ladies Football,  Kildare will play Tipperary in the All Ireland u14 Gold Final today at 1.30pm in Crettyard GAA.

Also today, in the Leinster Minor A championship, Round 3:  Dublin v Kildare in IT Blanchardstown at 2pm

A Kildare win will advance them to the final on July 6th.

SOCCER

Derry City missed the chance to move back to within four points of SSE Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers last night.

They were beaten 2-1 by Dundalk.

Shelbourne secured a 2-1 Dublin derby win over St Pat's. Bohemians beat Sligo Rovers by the same scoreline.

Drogheda United beat Finn Harps 3-1.

The Women's Champions League final takes place in Turin this evening.

Barcelona take on Lyon from 6pm.


RUGBY

In rugby’s United Championship today,  Leinster v Munster at the Aviva at 7.15; Connacht v Zebre at 5.15

Leinster have named a mainly 2nd string side for the game.

Naas’s Jamie Osborne is at Centre, while Kill’s Adam Byrne is in the replacements.

GOLF

At the US PGA, Rory McIlroy could only add a second round of 71 to his opening 65 and is five shots off the leader Will Zalatoris, who shot a 65 and leads by one stroke

 

Seamus Power and Shane Lowry both made the cut.

 

Power is tied-23rd on level par after a 69; and Lowry is +2 after a 72

 

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson equalled the lowest score in US PGA history with a superb 63 to lie four shots off the lead,

 

World number one and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler missed the cut on six over par.

 

Padraig Harrington, also miss the cut after rounds of 77 and 75 to leave him 12 over par
