Shamrock Rovers were forced to settle for a scoreless draw away to Drogheda United, with Captain Roberto Lopes sent off.
Shamrock Rovers' return to league action ended in a frustrating 0-0 draw against Drogheda United at Sullivan & Lambe Park last night.
The Hoops, playing their first domestic game since their Champions League exit, struggled to create clear-cut chances despite making several changes to the starting line-up.
John O'Sullivan came closest before the break when he struck the post, while new signing Jonathan Afolabi made his first appearance after coming on at half-time.
Drogheda also threatened after the restart, but neither side could find a breakthrough in an improved second half.
The game ended on a sour note for Rivers as captain Roberto Lopes was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a late challenge on Shane Farrell, although the dismissal had no bearing on the final result.
