Golf in Kildare

The final round of the KPMG Women’s Irish Open is underway at the K Club in Kildare today, with €450,000 in prize money on the line.

Leona Maguire begins the day seven shots off the lead after equalling the course record with a stunning nine-under-par 63 yesterday, leaving her tied for 6th on 11-under.

South Africa’s Casandra Alexander has a three-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard on 18-under.

Among the Irish challenge, Anna Foster is seven-under after an excellent third-round 66, while Kildare’s Lauren Walsh also climbed the leaderboard with a steady third-round 67.

Canice Screene, however, slipped back after following her second-round 67 with a 76 yesterday.

Foster, Walsh, Aine Donegan, and Screene are already out on the course, with Maguire due to tee off at 11:46am this morning.

Soccer

A brand new era in Irish football got underway yesterday with the new National League.

For Mayo FC, it was history with a first game at senior level, and a first win.

They beat St Francis 1-0, while Salthill Devon were 4-1 winners over Letterkenny Rovers.

In group 1, Mervue United and Cockhill Celtic drew 1-1, while it finished 2-2 between Bonagee United and Home Farm DCU.

In group 3, CK United were 2-1 winners over Newbridge Town.

In the Premier League yesterday, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest drew 2-all, while Bournemouth and Everton played out a 1-all draw.

Hull City beat Conventry 1-nil, and Newcastle looked very convincing as they won 2-nil against Spurs.

There are four Premier Leagues games today, Chelsea are home to Brighton at 2 o’clock.

It’s Xabi Alonso’s first league game at Stamford Bridge since taking charge of Chelsea.

Then at the same time, Brentford play Leeds and Sunderland play Fulham.

From half-past 4, Manchester United will be hoping to bounce back from their opening-day 2-nil defeat to Hull City when they play Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
