In the Leinster Minor Football Championship , Group 1, last night, Kildare beat Offaly by 3- 15 to 2- 11.

At half time, Kildare led 2-8 to 1-5.

6 points in that first half for Joey Cunningham to go with goals by Tadhg Donlon and Cian Keaveny.

The second half was a more even affair.

14 man Offaly closed  the gap to 4 points after 47 minutes. But 5 minutes later Kildare’s 3rd goal from Jack McCabe pushed Kildare’s lead to 3-12 to 2-8. 

Final score Kildare 3-15. Offaly 2-12.

SOCCER

Newcastle United and Manchester United boosted their hopes of Champions League football for next season with wins in the Premier League last night.

Third placed Newcastle won 5-1 away to West Ham, while Man U moved fourth in the table with a 1-0 victory over Brentford.

Marcus Rashford scored the winner at Old Trafford - his 15th Premier League goal of the season.

West Ham only lie above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid won 4-0 at Barcelona in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi final, qualifying for the decider by 4 goals to 1 on aggregate.

And Frank Lampard is set to be appointed as caretaker manager of Chelsea until the end of the season.

 

GOLF

It's day one of the Masters at Augusta, the first major of the year.

Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Seamus Power and amateur Matthew McClean are the Irish players in the field.

McClean tees off just after 1pm Irish time.

Lowry is out just after 2.35, with Power beginning his challenge in the following group.

McIlroy is in the penultimate three ball just before 7pm Irish time.

No Irish player has ever won the green jacket.


CRICKET

The tourists will need to force the hosts to bat again - Ireland currently trail by 62 runs with 5 wickets remaining.
