McSharry finishes 8th in Olympic 100m breaststroke final

Olympics

Mona McSharry says she's revising her goals upward for Paris 2024.

The former World Junior Swimming champion has finished eighth in the 100-metre breaststroke final at the Olympics.

McSharry's time of 1 minute 6.94 seconds was her slowest of three swims this week but the 20-year-old believes it's valuable experience for the Paris Games.

Later this morning, Darragh Greene competes in the heats of the men’s 200-metre breaststroke swimming.

Daniel Wiffen makes his Olympic debut in the 800 metre freestyle.

In between those races, the Irish quartet go in the 4 by 200 metre freestyle.

Belfast's Aidan Walsh is one win away from securing a medal in the men's welterweight boxing.

He's through to Friday's quarter-finals after collecting a unanimous points victory against Cameroon's Albert Mengue this morning.

The Irish Rugby 7s team suffered last-gasp heartbreak in missing out on a place in the knock-out stages.

Needing to win by eight-points, they conceded a last-minute try in their 12-7 win over Kenya in their final Pool game.

Harry McNulty and Hugo Lennox scored the Irish tries.

McNulty says it's a frustrating way to exit the competition:

Annalise Murphy has moved up to 20th place in sailing's Laser Radial after six races.

The 2016 medalist finished inside the top 10 of both of her races today.

Limerick's Carolyn Hayes finished in 23rd position in the women's triathlon, as Flora Duffy landed Bermuda's first-ever Olympics gold medal.

There will be no gold medal for one of the faces of the Games - after Naomi Osaka crashed out of the tennis.

The Japanese star who lit the flame during the opening ceremony was beaten in straight sets by Marketa Vondrousova, in the third round of the women's singles.

Portlaoise's O'Moore Park will play host to this evening's Leinster under-20 Hurling final.

Last season's beaten All-Ireland finalists Dublin go up against Galway at 7.30pm.

Rugby

Lions head-coach Warren Gatland will reveal his starting 15 for the second Test with South Africa, later this morning.

Should Wyn Jones remain sidelined with a shoulder issue, Mako Vunipola is expected to get the nod at loosehead prop.

Out-half Dan Biggar is also a doubt while Connacht's Bundee Aki could be in line to replace Elliot Daly in midfield.

The World champion Springboks will also reveal their team today.

Soccer

Manchester United are close to signing Raphael Varane.

They have reportedly agreed a fee with Spanish giants Real Madrid for the French international defender - believed to be around €50 million.

The deal for Varane would follow Jadon Sancho's move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund.

Racing

The Ado McGuiness-trained Saltonstall is bidding for a hat-trick in today's feature at the Galway Races, the Colm Quinn BMW Mile.

Jessica Harrington's Njord, who was second to Saltonstall in last year's renewal, is likely to go off the favourite.

The big race is off at 6.15pm, and the centre-piece of an eight-race card commencing at 4.35pm.
