GAA

Tributes are being paid to Donegal All-Ireland-winning footballer James McHugh, who died in a road traffic collision yesterday.

The Kilcar native played for Donegal between 1990 and 1998, and featured in their defeat of Dublin in the 1992 All-Ireland final.

He also won three Donegal club championships between 1985 and 1993.

Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty posted on Instagram that McHugh "will be remembered with great pride and affection in the county and beyond."

SWIMMING

Today's swimming is underway at the European Aquatic Championships in Paris.

Ellen Walshe won her heat in the 50-metres butterfly this morning, but her time of 26-point-6-2 seconds was not enough to qualify for the semis.

Alana Burns-Atkin finished 8th, while Rosalie Phelan came 10th in Heat 3.

The men's 100-metres freestyle heats are currently down for decision, with Evan Bailey and Matthew Hamilton competing.

Then, Mona McSharry and Ellie McCartney will be in action in the Women's 100-metres breaststroke.

John Shortt will contest the Men's 200m backstroke heats

Daniel Wiffen, Nathan Wiffen, and Liam Custer will all compete in the Men's 800m freestyle.

This evening, Jack Kelly could win Ireland's first medal of the Championships.

He goes in the 100-metres breaststroke final just before 5:50pm - Irish Time.



ATHLETICS

There's another busy day in store for Team Ireland at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Bori Akinola goes in round one of the men's 100-metres just before half 11am this morning.

He'll be bidding to join Israel Olatunde in this evening's semi-finals.

Sarah Healy will compete in the Women's 5-thousand metres final at 7:25pm, and Jack Raftery is in the Men's 400m semi-final just before 9.10pm.

Last night, Nick Griggs lost one of his shoes finishing 8th in the final of the men's 5000 metres.

Norwegian superstar Jakob Ingebrigtsen produced a sensational final sprint to take the gold.

Brian Fay finished 13th, while Darragh McElhinney crossed the line in 18th.

Nicola Tuthill threw a season's best 7.09 metres to qualify for Wednesday's final in the women's hammer throw.

Eric Favors came 10th in the men's shot put.

Sarah Lavin missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the women's 100-metres hurdles, finishing sixth in her heat.

SOCCER

Derry City are reportedly moving to terminate James McClean's contract with the club.

The former Republic of Ireland international returned to his hometown side ahead of the current League of Ireland season.

The Candystripes are due to hold an open training session, with reports that McClean is set to make an appearance.
