Tuesday Morning Sports Update

Keeping you up to date on soccer, rugby and racing.

SOCCER

The Republic of Ireland under-17s have the chance to create another piece of World Cup history this afternoon.

Colin O'Brien's side bid to reach the quarter-finals when they take on Switzerland in Doha.

Kick off is at 2.45pm Irish time.

The Ireland under-21s are also in action this evening.

Jim Crawford's side go away to Andorra for their latest European Championship qualifier, with kick off at 6.30pm.

The World Cup play-off picture will become clearer tonight, with Ireland hoping to have their place in Pot Two confirmed ahead of Thursday's draw.

Wales need to beat North Macedonia to edge their way in front of Ireland, while Bosnia Herzegovina could do likewise if they win away to Austria.

Elsewhere tonight, Scotland could secure automatic qualification for next summer's finals if they beat Denmark at Hampden Park.

Northern Ireland ended their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-nil win against Luxembourg last night.

Jamie Donley's penalty secured them the victory at Windsor Park.

Michael O'Neill's team finish third in their group and had already secured a play-off place through the Nations League.

RUGBY

The Irish rugby squad will continue preparations today for Saturday's showdown with South Africa at the Aviva Stadium.

Stuart McCloskey will play no part in that match, with the Ulster centre ruled out with a groin problem.

There's better news for Garry Ringrose and Josh Van Der Flier, with both players back in full training and available for selection this weekend.

RACING

There's racing at Limerick later, with the first off at 25-to-one.
