Waterford Claim Crucial Win Over Shelbourne

Tommy Lonergan's second-half goal earned Waterford a vital three points, lifting the Blues clear of the Premier Division's bottom spot.

Tommy Lonergan scored the only goal as Waterford boosted their SSE Airtricity Premier Division survival hopes with a 1-0 win over Shelbourne at the RSC.

The striker headed home early in the second half from a Pádraig Amond cross to secure all three points for Graham Coughlan's side.

Lonergan had the chance to add a second from the penalty spot later in the game, but his effort struck the crossbar.

Shelbourne pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Waterford held firm to record a victory that moves them three points clear of bottom-placed Sligo Rovers.
