SOCCER

Southampton kept their hopes of Championship promotion alive with a 2-1 extra time victory over Middlesbrough in their play off semi-final last night.

Shea Charles scored the winning goal in the 116th minute at St Mary's.

They'll face Hull in the final at Wembley on Saturday week.

Manchester City could move to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal this evening.

Pep Guardiola's side welcome Crystal Palace to the Etihad, with kick-off at 8pm.

Celtic have a major hurdle to jump tonight in their hopes of retaining their Scottish Premiership crown.

They're a point off Hearts, who they play at the weekend - before that, they need to beat Motherwell away from home.

The league leaders are in action at home to Falkirk, with both games kicking off at 8pm.

José Mourinho is in final negotiations to become the next head coach of Real Madrid.

The Portuguese coach won three trophies with the club over a three-year managerial stint, before leaving in 2013 to return to the Chelsea hotseat.

Mourinho is the clear favourite to succeed Alvaro Arbeloa, who only took the role in January.

GOLF

Rory McIlroy withdrew from a practice round ahead of the PGA Championship, which gets underway tomorrow.

The Ulsterman had previously admitted to having a blister on his foot, but it's understood his current issue is in his toe.

It's not clear how this may affect his bid for a third win in the major.

He's due to have Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth for company for the first two rounds.

RACING

There's racing at Punchestown today, where the first goes to post at just after 4:45pm.
