There was plenty of last-minute drama as the Premier League's summer transfer window closed last night.

Manchester City completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125-million a joint-record in British transfer history.

Sunderland finalised their deal for Lyon's Malick Fofana - Crystal Palace had attempted last-minute to poach the winger yesterday.

A total of £3.48billion was spent by Premier League clubs, making it the most expensive transfer window in history.

Championship club Lincoln City signed Republic of Ireland international Chiedozie Ogbene on loan from Ipswich until January.

Johnny Kenny completed a permanent move from Celtic to Preston North End, for a reported fee of £3-million.



Adam Idah was on the scoresheet for Swansea City, who moved top of the Championship last night with a 2-0 win over Watford.

Sammie Szmodics got the opener for Derby County, as they beat Portsmouth 2-0 at Fratton Park.

There were also wins for Bristol City, Sheffield United, and West Ham.

This evening, Brian Barry Murphy's Cardiff City take on Queen's Park Rangers from 7:45pm.

Republic of Ireland winger Millenic Alli could go up against his international teammate Max O'Leary when Charlton make the trip to West Brom.


TENNIS

Top seed Alexander Zverev needed a deciding set to win his first-round match at the US Open.

In the last few minutes, the French Open champion came from 2-1 down to beat Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Arthur Ashe.

Meanwhile, home favourite Taylor Fritz also booked his place in the second round with a straight sets win over fellow American Darwin Blanch.

While Australian Open winner Elena Rybakina cruised past Thea Frodin.


The second round gets underway at Flushing Meadows this afternoon.

Home favourite Frances Tiafoe and defending men's singles champion Carlos Alcaraz are among those who could be in action throughout the day.

In the women's draw, 11th seed Marta Kostyuk faces American Sloane Stephens, and 2022 champion Iga Swiatek takes on Argentina's Nadia Podoroska.
