Sinn Féin TD Patricia Ryan said the landlord never registered with the RTB
Some 16 families have allegedly been evicted from their homes in South Kildare.
A Kildare has drawn the governments attention to the spate of illegal evictions taking place in Athy.
Speaking during a Promised Legislation debate with the Tánaiste, Deputy Patricia Ryan outlined the terrible treatment of tenants by a landlord in the area and called on the government to put additional safeguards in place.
Sinn Féin TD for Kildare South, Patricia Ryan commented: “I wanted to speak about an alarming spate of illegal evictions that are happening in Athy.
“These tenancies were in 22 apartments in the same block owned by a certain landlord.
“So far, he has illegally evicted 16 families with more to follow.
“Families told me of the gut-wrenching feeling of coming home, only to find all their belongings packed into black binbags and left on the street!
“Most are vulnerable families in receipt of HAP," she explained.
“He didn’t register these tenancies with the RTB and now he wants them out – no ifs or buts.
“My office is liaising with Threshold on this issue who advised that these evictions were illegal, and we are also helping those affected.
“Many of folks are scared out of their wits by this landlord and his actions. Some have even reported being followed by enforcers working on his behalf.
“Are you aware of this Taoiseach? Do you condemn these actions?" she questioned.
“Will your government propose new legislation to clamp down on rouge landlords and illegal evictions?”
The Tánaiste responded that affected families should simply call the Guards.
Deputy Ryan later said: “It is clear from the Tánaiste’s response that he’s out of touch with the reality on the ground here.
“As I mentioned in my contribution, these tenants are afraid for their safety.
“I sincerely hope that the government take this matter seriously and do what they can help those affected by these illegal evictions," she added.
