The practice is discredited by The World Health Organization and more than 60 health professional associations in over 20 countries.
21 NGOs, advocacy and rights groups have co-signed a letter calling for a ban on so-called "conversion therapy".
The letter described the conversion therapy as "an abusive and dehumanising practice that seeks to ‘cure’ or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity/expression."
The practice is discredited by The World Health Organization and more than 60 health professional associations in over 20 countries.
Brazil, Ecuador, Germany and Malta have already banned conversion therapy.
There are regional bans in place in parts of the US, Canada, Australia and Spain, while Argentina, Uruguay, Samoa, Fiji and Naura have de facto bans.
The letter states that New Zealand is among the latest country to have "enacted prohibitions in this area, explicitly encompassing not just sexual orientation but gender identity too."
