The Department of Agriculture has appointed UCD's Professor Patrick Wall to lead a task force to address the approval of horse abattoirs and traceability issues.

It follows concerns that the Department of Agriculture would be investigating itself.

Operations at Ireland's only abattoir in Straffan have been fully suspended, after footage emerged of horses being severely mistreated.

Wall was chairman of Horse Sports Ireland from 2013 to 2016.

Taoiseach Simon Harris said it is his understanding that Wall is leading the task force.
