Some 24,614 adverse incidents reported in the past five years, according to figures released by the HSE for the CHO area 7, which takes in Kildare and West Wicklow.
The figures also show 3,421 people in this area required first aid, 2,510 required medical treatment, roughly 22 people were left with a long-term disability in this CHO area, while roughly 160 people in this CHO area would have died from these mistakes since 2018.
Una O Connor, Aontú Rep for Kildare said: “This is a terribly serious issue, people have died in their thousands nationally. Last year’s figures saw a jump of 11% on the number of adverse incidents year on year. These are not the full figures either as they don’t include Voluntary Health Organisations”.
“When people go into hospital, they expect to come out well, however we have the mind boggling situation that people are often coming out of hospital in a worse state than when they went in” .
“This is a truly shocking story – it is actually beyond comprehension that people are being left with permanent disability or even dying as a result of mistakes in the health service – It underscores all the more the need for investment, better capacity and staffing.
"I truly believe we need an investigation into the causes of the spike in adverse incidents. Reform and the investment is necessary to end this disaster.
"It’s clear that the gross understaffing of our health service is putting enormous pressure on staff. There is a proven correlation between understaffing and mistakes being made.
“It is time to resolve the ongoing and dangerous Hospital crisis," she added.
