The incident occurred at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre
A man has died following a shooting at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow this evening.
A nine-year-old child also sustained an injury to the leg during the incident.
Gardaí responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 6pm.
It is believed a lone gunman opened fire at the scene before being pronounced dead a short time later.
A suspicious device was discovered on the man, prompting the deployment of the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
The area has since been evacuated and secured.
The child’s injuries are understood to be non-life threatening.
No other injuries have been reported at this time.
In a statement, An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of an incident at a retail premises in Carlow town. The alarm was raised shortly after 6.15pm. The premises has been evacuated and the scene is preserved. The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend. At this time, there is no further concern for public safety.”
Gardai are asking the public not to share any video footage of the incident on social media or messaging apps, but instead to submit any relevant recordings directly to Carlow Garda Station.
