A man in his 20s has died in hospital following a serious assault in Kildare town early on Sunday morning.
Gardaí said the man, known locally as Ryan, was discovered unresponsive on McGee Terrace at around 3.15am.
He was taken to Naas General Hospital but died some time today.
Kfm understands that the young man suffered serious head injuries, which resulted in a bleed to the brain.
Kfm also understands that the man knew those involved in the alleged altercation and that it was not a random attack.
It it is understood that an altercation originally started on a bus before ending in tragic circumstances in an area of McGee terrace, close to Kildare Town Garda Station.
The coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.
Gardaí say the results will determine the direction of their investigation.
They are appealing for witnesses and are asking anyone who was in the McGee Terrace area between 2am and 4am on Sunday to come forward.
